Dragoncroft was founded 18 years ago in
Chesapeake, Virginia. At that time, Monty was finishing up his 30 years
with the United States Navy and I was teaching school. In 1987 we relocated
to Tennessee and brought our four Welsh Ponies with us. Since that date,
we have expanded our herd to 24 Welsh Mountain Ponies. During the past 18
years we bred and sold over 20 ponies and cobs. Today all the mares and
stallions on our farm are pure Welsh Mountain Ponies.
After seeing Meadowlawn Squire, I wanted to breed one of our Penrhyn
Mares to him. I picked Penrhyn Southern Belle, a Champion Weanling in
Canada, to breed to him. In 1992, Belle was bred to Squire.
Early in the morning of June 26,1993 a lovely roan chestnut colt was
born. We went down to the pasture where the bred mares stay and were greeted
at the gate by the bold colt. Now to figure out a name for him. I liked
St. George (the damsel he saved from the Dragon was called Sabra) and
Monty wanted to call him Welshman (British Merchant Steamer). Monty won.
We showed Welshman as a yearling and a 2year old winning Champion or
Reserve Champion Colt every time out. He was then turned out as we had
other ponies to show. About three years ago I was watching him trot across
the pasture and knew we should show him again. The first year he showed
at two shows in halter only; he was the Champion Section A Stallion under
a Welsh Judge in Missouri. The second year he debuted in driving winning
the stake class at Tulsa which had 15 entries and he was Champion Section
A Stallion at two other shows. These past years, with John Almond's help,
we showed at eighteen shows. He has been named the 2001 and 2002 WPCSA
Champion Section A Stallion, 2001 WPCSA Reserve Champion Carriage Driving
and 3rd in the 2001 WPCSA Pleasure Driving 12.2 and under and in 2002
was the Reserve Champion. In 2002 he achieved his individual Legion of
Merit.
